Current lightning data

Blitzortung.org is a private network of lightning detectors with more than 1,000 participants in Europe. They register the electromagnetic signals from lightning.

Combined with very precise timing and location data, lightning strikes can be calculated based on the signals (TOA – time of arrival method).

The accuracy of Blitzortung is very high and is usually within less than 1 kilometer. This can be directly compared with the lightning detection systems used by commercial and meteorological institutes.
