ESD stands for ElectroStatic Discharge, commonly referred to in Danish as static electricity.
Electrostatic charging and discharging occur through friction between non-conductive materials and under specific atmospheric conditions. In principle, lightning is also a large-scale form of ESD. What electrostatic charging and discharging have in common is a high-voltage pulse that can be harmful to electronic equipment.
